THE NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL OF BANKING

2008 Applications will be availible soon!

The Northern New England School of Banking is one of the oldest banking schools in the nation. In 1953 Professors William (Bill) Carter at Dartmouth College, Carroll Degler at UNH and Philip Lohman at UVM developed a program on current issues in banking designed for both junior and senior officers of commercial banks in Vermont and New Hampshire. It was thus known as the Vermont-New Hampshire School of Banking and was sponsored by the banking associations of the two states.

In the early years the leadership of the School rotated among the founders and the School was held on the campus of the director for that year, the first full week after Labor Day. This pattern was followed until the mid 1960's when Maine joined the school. This added a professional representative from the University of Maine, a fourth location to the circuit, and a change in the name to The Northern New England School. As university calendars advanced the starting dates for the fall semester to early September, it became impossible to use campus facilities for the banking school at least for September dates. The Kellogg Center for Continuing Education (The New England Center), designed for programs like the banking school, opened in 1970 and the School has been held there every fall except in 1984.

Over the years the thrust of the program has responded to the changing needs of bankers. With the development of regional and national meetings for senior officers and the 'how to' seminars for narrow specific banking functions, the Northern New England School shifted its emphasis to a program in general banking geared to supervisors and junior officers.

All students are expected to submit a written assignment following the residential session to receive School Certification. The School continues to utilize many formats of teaching, including lecture, case studies and workshops to encourage student participation and expose students to ideas of banking industry leaders.
